Overview
The Vigilant Heart Charitable Society (VHCS) was incorporated and formally registered as a nongovernmental and non-profit charitable trust under the Corporate Affairs Commission of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in September 2007. Before then Mrs. Maria Iriowen Osawemen with an uncommon passion for helping the needy and underprivileged had been engaged actively in works of charity at various streets, centres and orphanages in Lagos State. She recognizes and reveres Christ in the underprivileged. Initially, the idea of establishing an orphanage never occurred to her but the call and determination to serve orphans and the disadvantaged was her preoccupation. She visited orphanages fed and bathed the children and supplied some of their basic necessities.
Filled with the inspiration to render services and provide adequate care for motherless babies, orphans and abandoned children, she decided to organise a support group.
She set up a Mobile Soup Kitchen and invited friends and volunteers who included wives of members of the diplomatic corps that accompanied her in many of her visits to Rehabilitation and Training Centre (RTC), Majidun, Ikorodu, the Remand Home, Girls’ Approved School, and transit Village for motherless children, Idi-Araba, all in, Lagos State. The services of the Mobile Soup Kitchen was also extended to children living in other disadvantaged communities.
Mrs. Maria Osawemen’s passion for the underprivileged, sympathy for the suffering and her self-sacrificing charity was given a form and structure when The Vigilant Heart Charitable Society was formally registered by Barr. Osawemen as a non-profit organisation for the provision of shelter for orphans, abandoned and vulnerable children. It was also established to foster access to good quality education by underprivileged children and protect children against abuses at every stage of their development.
